At Sturminster Newton High School, our badge is a powerful symbol of identity, heritage, and aspiration. Its imagery — the breastplate, sword, boots, and belt — originates from a passage in the Bible, Ephesians 6, which describes the “armour of God.” While the original context is spiritual, we have reinterpreted these symbols to reflect the values and direction of our school today.
Historical Origins: The Armour of God
The badge draws from Ephesians 6:10–18, where the Apostle Paul uses the metaphor of a Roman soldier’s armour to describe spiritual readiness and moral strength. The passage includes:
- The Belt of Truth
- The Breastplate of Righteousness
- The Boots of Readiness (from the Gospel of Peace)
- The Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God)
These elements were originally intended to equip believers for spiritual resilience and moral clarity in the face of adversity.
A Modern Interpretation for Our School Community
While we honour the badge’s biblical roots, we have reimagined it’s meaning to reflect the values that guide our school today. Each symbol now represents a principle that is relevant, inclusive, and empowering for all students and staff — regardless of faith background.
The Belt – Belonging and Community
The belt holds everything together — just as a sense of belonging and community binds our school.
- It represents unity, inclusion, and shared purpose.
- It reminds us that everyone has a place here, and that we are stronger when we support one another.
The Breastplate – Responsibility
The breastplate protects the heart — symbolising our moral compass and personal accountability.
- We take responsibility for our actions, our learning, and our impact on others.
- It reflects our commitment to doing what is right, even when no one is watching.
The Boots – Resilience
Boots are made for movement — for stepping forward with purpose and strength.
- They represent resilience: our ability to keep going, to adapt, and to grow through challenge.
- We wear them as a symbol of readiness — to learn, to lead, and to make a difference.
The Sword – Respect
The sword, once a symbol of spiritual defence, now represents respect — the strength to stand up for what is right and to treat others with dignity.
- It reflects moral courage, clarity of thought, and the power of respectful action.
- It reminds us that respect is not passive — it is something we actively uphold in our words, choices, and relationships.
