Maths

At Sturminster Newton High School, the Mathematics curriculum is built on the principles of honesty, effort and high expectations for all. We are committed to providing an ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced curriculum that ensures equity of provision, so that every student experiences high-quality teaching and learning in every mathematics classroom they enter.

Our curriculum is designed to develop concentration, attention to detail and critical thinking, enabling students to become confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians. Through a coherent and well-sequenced curriculum from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5, students build secure mathematical knowledge that deepens over time, allowing them to make connections between concepts and apply their learning with accuracy and confidence.

We aim for all students to have a positive experience of mathematics, developing both numeracy and mathematical literacy that equips them for everyday life and future study. Lessons are carefully planned to support all learners, while also providing appropriate challenge to stretch and inspire. We place strong emphasis on reasoning, problem solving and mathematical communication, ensuring students can articulate their thinking clearly and logically.

Mathematics opens the door to a wide range of STEM pathways, and our curriculum is designed to raise aspirations and prepare students to progress successfully. Through consistent expectations, expert teaching and purposeful assessment, we support every student to achieve their very best in mathematics and to leave school inspired, confident and prepared for the next stage of their learning.
