The Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is founded on the belief that every student is entitled to high expectations and equitable access to language learning. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students develop the confidence and competence to communicate effectively in another language.
Learning is structured to build vocabulary, grammar and phonics progressively, enabling students to understand and produce language accurately. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are developed in balance, with frequent opportunities to revisit and apply prior knowledge to new contexts.
The curriculum broadens students’ cultural awareness by exploring cultural differences, values and perspectives from other countries. This promotes curiosity, respect and understanding of the wider world, supporting students to see beyond their immediate experiences.
MFL develops resilience, memory and communication skills that are transferable across the curriculum. By the time students leave school, they are confident communicators with the linguistic and cultural knowledge needed for further study, travel and employment in an increasingly global society.
